Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has forced about a third of the pre-war population to flee their homes. Buildings and infrastructure continue to be destroyed, critical services are disrupted, and large areas are contaminated.
Millions of Ukrainians now live in damaged homes or in buildings that are poorly adapted to provide adequate protection.
The Guardians of Well-Being activity aims to support people in communities across Ukraine affected by the hostilities.
This area includes humanitarian projects aimed at helping people in communities and supporting medical institutions.
Call for proposals for community foundations of the "Guardians of Welfare" network
The purpose of the competition is to provide quick assistance in solving humanitarian problems of the community and its residents during martial law, emergency situations, and war through grants for community foundations.
Objectives:
- Organizing humanitarian aid for community residents to prepare for the winter: insulation materials for homes, warm clothes, arrangement of heating points, etc.
- Arrangement of housing for internally displaced persons: repairs, insulation of dormitories, etc.
- Organizing assistance to social institutions: schools, hospitals, orphanages, hospices.
- Medical assistance to community residents
- Strengthening the technical capacities of community foundations to work in war conditions.
As a result of the grants provided by Global Giving, 9 non-governmental organizations were awarded grants.
MedAid
During the full-scale invasion, Russia completely destroyed 144 medical facilities in Ukraine. In addition, more than 1,000 hospitals have been damaged and require significant funds to rebuild. Ukraine's healthcare system is under intense pressure: the loss of life and suffering of hundreds of Ukrainians who have become daily targets of shelling.
During 2022, thanks to the MedAid project, we issued 18 grants to Ukrainian communities and made 24 purchases of medical supplies: generators for intensive care units, operating lamps, intensive care beds, medicines (basic and special), hygiene products, bandages, baby food, consumables for various departments, wheelchairs, crutches, functional beds, and more.
The affected hospitals need not only restoration, but also modern equipment to enable them to fulfill their important mission of saving lives.
The goal of the project is to provide vital medical equipment to empower the surviving hospitals. These resources increase opportunities for patients. We can save lives and empower every hospital by providing free access to medical care.
We have the ability to directly influence the capacity of public hospitals, improving the quality and quantity of their services. In particular, by implementing the project, we were able to influence the state of medicine in the frontline regions and relieve the flow of patients to hospitals in Western Ukraine.

Project implementation:
A generator for uninterrupted operation worth UAH 470 thousand was delivered to Berezan City Hospital

The project was implemented through the effective cooperation of the Berezan Community Foundation, the Berezan City Council, and the National Network for the Development of Local Philanthropy Philanthropists under the MedAid Special Fund program and with financial support from the German Marshall found
The generator has a capacity of 80 kW and can provide uninterrupted power supply to the entire hospital in case of a power outage in an emergency.
The total project cost of UAH 470 thousand included the purchase, installation, and connection of the generator. UAH 40 thousand of which was allocated by the Berezan City Council.
Purchased medicines for the Novoyavoriv community for community residents and internally displaced persons

Shelter Box
In 2022, we launched a humanitarian project in cooperation with Shelter Box to help people with the necessary things.
Together with our partners and our community foundations, we covered 11 communities and distributed aid to 14,516 families.
The aid consisted of sleeping bags, blankets, lanterns, 3 sets of adult winter clothing (hat, scarf and gloves) and 2 water canisters and a stove.

"Clothes and a change of clothes is all we took with us and left. And when the electricity was turned off, we bought candles and flashlights. You gave us flashlights and it will be better with them, because they are charged by the sun, everything is very good. We also always have jerry cans and water there," the woman says.
The family received 1 sleeping bag, 1 blanket, a children's hat, scarf and mittens, as well as an adult set of hats, scarves and mittens, 3 solar-powered lanterns and 3 jerry cans of water;
In November 2023, we started the 2nd stage of humanitarian aid distribution in 9 regions of Ukraine. In 4 months, we reached about 7000 families
Humanitarian aid is distributed and delivered by community foundations that are members of the National Network for the Development of Local Philanthropy.
In preparation for the project, we conducted a survey in the communities to better meet the needs of the residents, so together with Shelter Box we have formed the following aid packages: kitchen, hygiene kits, kits for repairing houses damaged by military operations, and sleeping kits.
